What does the Sun signify? How can we see its five faces in the tarot?

In this class we review the nature of the light of the intellect, the planet of prophecy, the bridge between the collective and the individual, the Sun. We diagram the Solar decans and then review each of the five Solar decans as syncretized to the minor arcana as well as the spirits, powers and applications of each:

• Sun in Aries 2/ The Three of Wands

• Sun in Gemini 3 / The Ten of Swords

• Sun in Virgo 1 / The Eight of Pentacles

• Sun in Scorpio 2 / The Six of Cups

• Sun in Capricorn 3 / The Four of Pentacles

With the Four of Pentacles in particular, I am thinking of that moment in Frederick Douglass’s 1855 narrative when they are planning for revolt inside the Freedom School. The Masters discover their plan and they pass a note that reads “Own Nothing.” Its an allegory for freedom, for people who have been enslaved, old and sold there will always be a structural antagonism with property. Obviously decolonization is not a metaphor, and it is about aspiring, enacting, and inhabiting a world not owned by anyone, a world without masters.
